Healthcare Support Worker Hannah Rosewell has been named May’s Health Hero in recognition of her outstanding care and compassion for emergency gynaecology patients.
For the past ten years, Hannah has worked on the Gynaecology Ward at the University Hospital of Wales, where she works weekend and night shifts.
The ward is divided into two sections for oncology patients and emergency gynaecology patients. Many of the emergency patients come in with early pregnancy complications, such as bleeding or pain referred by their GP, the Out-of-Hours service or the Emergency Unit.
Reflecting on her patients, Hannah said: “It can be the worst time of their lives. It is scary, it's frightening.”
Hannah’s exceptional care was highlighted by a patient who nominated her for the Health Hero award. The nomination read: “Hannah is a very kind, caring and knowledgeable asset to the gynaecology team. She is caring and delivers her patients excellent care.
“I attended the unit and was greeted by Hannah and instantly felt relaxed with how Hannah welcomed me to the unit and cared for me during the early hours until I was then discharged by a doctor. Her care and compassion was outstanding noticed by myself and my partner. Whilst being on the ward you could see how dedicated she was in delivering her patients the best care."
Given the nature of Hannah’s work and the emotional challenges patients are facing, it is rare to receive this kind of feedback. “I think because of the circumstances our patients aren’t in a place to thank anybody. So, it was nice to hear this because we don't get many thanks.
“I just come to work to do my job, and I just treat everybody how I would want my mum, my sisters, my friends to be treated.
Asked how she became a Healthcare Support Worker, Hannah points to her mum and two sisters who also work at the University Hospital Wales. She said: “I think it’s just in our blood!”.
What Hannah enjoys most about her work is the variety each shift brings and the opportunity to learn. “We are a really good team,” she said. “There's a good team effort on the ward. We're always learning, teaching each other new things and working together and trying to do as much as we can.”
Health Hero is kindly sponsored by Park Plaza Cardiff. As May’s Health Hero, Hannah will receive a traditional afternoon tea for two.
