A research project to assess the benefit of screening pregnant women for group B Streptococci. This is a bacteria that can be passed onto a baby during vaginal delivery. In babies Group B Steptococcus can lead to breathing difficulties, difficulties in feeding and fever and occasionally it can lead to severe complications including sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. The research project involves screening all pregnant women and treating with antibiotics to reduce the risk of transmission, it has also supported improved monitoring of babies following birth.
