Three Cardiff and Vale UHB projects win NHS Wales Awards 2025

20th November 2025

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is celebrating after winning three awards at the NHS Wales Awards 2025. The awards were announced at a ceremony on Tuesday, 18th November 2025.

The NHS Wales Awards celebrate excellence in quality and improvement across health and care in Wales.

Cardiff and Vale UHB was shortlisted in eight categories and proudly received the following awards:

NHS Wales Effective Care Award 2025

Congratulations to the Palliative Care Team! Working collaboratively with colleagues across Cardiff and Vale UHB and in partnership with Velindre University NHS Trust, the team has received the NHS Wales Effective Care Award 2025 for introducing innovative home diagnostic tools that enhance palliative and end-of-life care within the community.

This project focused on delivering value-based, person-centred care for patients with life-limiting conditions, particularly interstitial lung disease (ILD), by introducing point-of-care testing (POCT) in community palliative care settings. The aim of this project was to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and ensure care aligns with patient preferences to remain at home during end-of-life.

NHS Wales Information Award 2025

Cardiff and Vale UHB’s Digital Nursing team, part of the Corporate Nursing team, received the NHS Wales Information Award 2025 for increasing the meaningful use of nursing data by 50% within a year, enabling evidence-based and confident clinical decision-making.

The work of the Digital Nursing team began with a shared understanding that access to timely, reliable staffing data was limited. Prior to this, data was fragmented, underused, and disconnected from daily practice, leaving nurses without timely insight to manage risks, staffing, and patient care effectively.

To bridge this gap, the team co-designed a suite of interactive dashboards using Microsoft Power BI. Working closely with nursing teams in workshops, they introduced the tools and continuously refined them based on feedback to ensure they met real world nursing needs.

The Digital Nursing team brings together a vital blend of clinical and analytical expertise, with nurses Emma Davies, Aron White and Helen Bonello working alongside embedded analyst Ceri Dallimore. This combined experience meant they could rapidly develop tools that were practical, relevant and shaped by real nursing experience.

NHS Wales Workforce Sustainability Award 2025

The Corporate Nursing team also received the NHS Wales Workforce Sustainability Award 2025 for leading a nurse-driven, data-led improvement programme that addresses safety risks from inconsistent staffing and reduces reliance on temporary staff.

The NHS Wales Awards showcase examples of incredible quality and safety improvement work transforming the experience and outcomes for people in Wales.
