Bonfire night celebrations are taking place over the weekend. It’s important to stay vigilant around bonfires, fireworks and sparklers to reduce injuries.

Be sure to:

🎆 Keep a safe distance from fireworks and bonfires.

🎆 Always supervise children.

🎆 Only use legal, approved fireworks.️

🎆 Use a bucket of sand to extinguish sparklers.

🎆 Never return to a lit firework.

Stay vigilant to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

We usually see an increase in burn injuries around Bonfire Night, but most minor burns can be treated at home.

For minor burns, keep the burn clean, do not burst any blisters that form and follow first aid advice:

1. Stop the burning process - Remove the person from the area, douse flames with water or smother flames with a blanket.

2. Remove clothing / jewellery near the burnt area.

3. Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes.

4. Cover the burn with cling film.

5. Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

6. Raise the affected area, if possible.

More serious burns will require professional medical attention.
