24 December 2024 (updated January 2)
We are seeing an increase in flu both in the community and across our hospital sites, which is resulting in several ward closures across University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough.
Intelligence from Public Health Wales is indicating that flu is likely to peak in the coming days, and we are implementing further infection, prevention and control measures to help keep patients, colleagues and visitors safe.
We are advising anyone who has been unwell with cold or flu-like symptoms to avoid visiting any of our hospital sites so we can reduce the risk of further incidents and outbreaks.
Patients at healthcare sites will be asked to wear a mask in all waiting areas. Patients within wards will also be asked to wear a mask if they are away from their bed spaces. Colleagues will also be required to wear a mask in all clinical areas.
The best protection against seasonal viruses are the flu and COVID-19 vaccines which are available free of charge to eligible groups including older people, those with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women.
All eligible people will be invited to receive their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations at either their GP practice, local pharmacy or nearest community vaccination clinic. Please attend these appointments when they’re offered to you.
From January 2025, people over 65, children and adults who have a weakened immune system, and Health Board staff can walk into one of our Community Vaccination Centres (CVCs) for a flu and COVID-19 vaccine if they are yet to receive them.
In addition, children who are in Reception to Year 11 can access the nasal spray form of the flu vaccine at these CVCs if they missed it at school.
The CVCs are open as follows:
Rookwood CVC, Fairwater Road, Llandaff, CF5 2YN
Open from January 2 to January 31 inclusive (9am to 5.45pm)
Barry CVC, Colcot Road. Barry, CF62 8YH
Open Jan 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 19, 20, 24 and 25 (9am to 5.45pm)
Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Round Wood, Llanedeyrn, CF23 9PF
Open Jan 2 and 3 (9am to 4.45pm)
All people are asked to wear a mask while attending any of the CVCs to reduce the spread of flu and COVID-19.
