Kick start your Autumn with NYLO's nutrition family programme

16 July 2022

Nutrition for Your Little One’s (NYLO) free family programme is available to families within the Cardiff and Vale area with children ages 1-5.

The programme aims to provide parents with the confidence to provide a balanced diet for their children and help them maintain a healthy weight.

Claire Fulthorpe, Lead Dietitian for the NYLO programme said: “The NYLO programme is designed to be fun and engaging for parents and their children, incorporating activities, snack time, and active play. By engaging with families in this way we are giving them the tools they need to develop healthy relationships with food for life.”

“This programme is beneficial to all, but particularly to children who are already above a healthy weight or not eating a balanced diet.”

The two-hour weekly sessions are for parents and carers to attend with their child. Parents/carers and children will be in separate sessions for the first 1 hour 40 minutes, and will then reunite for a family snack time for the remaining 20 minutes.

Children will be encouraged to take part in healthy food activity and active play sessions, delivered by registered childcare staff.

Families will receive resources to take home each week, and information about activities to try at home.

Over the sessions the programme covers:

  • A healthy balanced diet for young children
  • Correct portion sizes and healthy snack choices
  • Reading food labels and positive parenting styles
  • Ways to manage fussy eating and encourage new foods
  • Tips to save time and money
  • Ideas for active play

NYLO was launched in March 2021 in alignment with Welsh Government’s Healthy Weight Healthy Wales strategy, to give children the best start in life.

Additionally, the service corresponds with Cardiff and the Vale’s Move More, Eat Well 2020-2023 Plan, which strives to ensure that people are moving more and eating well throughout their lives.
