Why did you not keep Ysbyty Calon Y Draig/Dragon's Heart Hospital for the second peak?

It was always an agreement with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) that they would require the stadium back for the Six Nations in 2021 with the first game scheduled for 7th February 2020. After agreement with the WRU and the Welsh Government, it was agreed to finalise the use of the stadium as a field hospital.

Also, based on scientific modelling and data from Welsh Government colleagues and local intelligence, the Health Board will need to provide 600 additional beds to accommodate predicted capacity. Ysbyty Calon Y Ddraig / Dragon’s Heart Hospital can accommodate up to 2,000 beds which is far greater than the Health Board requires. We went through a rigorous options appraisal process and building a temporary facility at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) was evaluated as the best option, both financially and operationally.

However, we will be re-using equipment from Ysbyty Calon Y Ddraig / Dragon’s Heart Hospital for the UHW Lakeside Wing.
