Clinical Musculoskeletal Assessment & Treatment Service

CMATS logo

The Clinical Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment Service (CMATS) reflects current best practice around Wales and offers our patients a new and improved way to access specialist advice for musculoskeletal conditions.

This service provides specialist assessment and treatment of joint and muscle problems in a timely manner, close to home, and reduces the need to access larger hospital services to get an expert opinion.

The service receives referrals from GPs and other health care professionals for patients with joint or muscle problems that have not resolved with first line management.  Specialist trained healthcare professionals in the CMATS team can see these patients to provide further treatment options.

A pilot demonstrated that CMATS increased patient satisfaction compared to previous services, managed to see patients quicker and improved processes to ensure efficiency.  It is a is a better way of providing our patients with the best care so is now being made available to patients across Cardiff and Vale UHB.

The CMATS is run by a multidisciplinary team including advanced practitioner physiotherapists and GPs with special interest in MSK. These healthcare professionals work together to share expertise, support one another and deliver the best possible service to patients accessing CMATS. They are supported by their orthopaedic surgery colleagues.

Ensuring that the service continues to meet the needs of its patients is of paramount importance.  Consequently, ongoing monitoring of patient experience and service outcomes will take place.
