Psychological Therapies Hub

The ‘Hub’ primarily delivers Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for a range of anxiety disorders.

The PT Hub provides individual CBT for Social Anxiety, complex presentations and  specific phobias and group CBT for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Health Anxiety and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

What happens following referral?

  • The Psychological Therapies Hub will review your referral details. You will be added to our assessment waitlist and contacted in due course to arrange an appointment (and will be offered a choice of face-to-face, telephone or video appointments).

What happens in this face-to-face appointment?

  • You will meet a therapist from the team who will assess your needs.
  • If it is felt that we can offer you a suitable psychological therapy, you will be offered an intervention following the assessment.
  • If you and the therapist believe that the therapies we offer won’t be helpful, the therapist will help you identify an alternative pathway.
  • Sometimes the therapist will need to discuss the assessment with the rest of the team before making a decision. This will be communicated to you as soon as possible.

What is CBT?

  • CBT is a structured, evidence-based treatment that has been shown to be effective for the treatment of a number of anxiety disorders and depression.
  • CBT helps us to understand the interaction between our thoughts, feeling and behaviours and how these links can maintain the problems we face. It also allows us to learn strategies and techniques to overcome these.

What does it involve?

  • Individual treatment generally requires weekly attendance at a 1-hour session over 12 weeks.
  • Group treatment requires weekly attendance at a 1.5-hour session for the duration of the course (usually 10 weeks). Both forms of treatment require a willingness to fully participate and set time aside to practice the techniques you have learned between sessions.

When and where does the treatment take place?

  • At Cardiff Royal Infirmary, or conducted virtually.
