The Welsh Neuropsychiatry Service
The Welsh Neuropsychiatry Service is a specialist tertiary mental health service for individuals who have suffered a serious acquired brain injury, and provides a comprehensive resource for the assessment, investigation, management and rehabilitation for patients suffering with neuropsychiatric, cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems as a result of that injury.
The service is based at Hafan y Coed, University Hospital Llandough. It has a 10 bedded Inpatient Unit on Ash Ward and operates a Community, Day and Outpatient Service from Ash Day Services. The new Inpatient Ward has a modern therapeutic and recovery-focused environment, with spacious neuro-rehabilitation sized en-suite rooms.
Patients requiring our service present with a range of physical, cognitive, emotional and /or behaviour problems, and we aim to optimise physical, cognitive, communication and occupational recovery.
Service Provision
- 10 bedded inpatient service
- Inter-disciplinary team approach: nursing, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, psychology
- Positive Behaviour Management
- ADL rehabilitation
- Medical and Neuropsychiatric monitoring and review
- Day Unit - providing a structured day programme of assessment and neuro-rehabilitation strategies to support recovery and adjustment
- Specialist Out-patient Clinics
- Community Support and Rehabilitation
Referral Criteria
The service takes referrals from across Wales from GPs, Neurologists, Rehabilitation Consultants, Mental Health Teams, Social Workers and Voluntary Organisations.
We accept referrals for adults over 18 years with an acquired brain injury as a result of trauma or a neurological event / illness but excluding stroke and degenerative disorders for whom other services exist. Referrals for those approaching 18 years are considered on a case by case basis.
